Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister expected a more difficult transition following the departure of Jürgen Klopp and is excited for what the future might hold.
When Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp decided it was time to move on, few would have predicted the Reds would win their 20th league title the next season no matter the work Klopp did to rebuild the squad or the quality of new manager Arne Slot.
Not even the players were expecting things to go this well this quickly, including Alexis Mac Allister—one of the midfield quartet Klopp brought in the summer before to rebuild an aging position group—who admits he wasn’t thinking title last summer.
“I didn’t think we were going to win the league so quickly because we’re just starting out,” Mac Allister told ESPN Argentina. “It was a huge change, but the coaches and players know we can still keep improving and hopefully it’s the start of something big.
“I think I’m in the best moment of my career now. I’m happy with the season I had and for being able to show what I can do at this great club, but I always say I depend a lot on my team and here I have found players who have helped me a lot in my game.”
Along with fellow 2023 signings Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo, Klopp left a strong, restocked midfield for Slot—and the expectation now will be for Slot to belatedly make a few of his own signings and push for more trophies.
Whoever arrives in the offseason to strengthen the squad, Mac Allister will be key to those future trophy hopes, and with him the Reds certainly look well positioned to fight it out at the top of the pack in both England and Europe for the foreseeable future.
