Former Super Eagles forward, Daniel Amokachi has challenged the NFF to make every FIFA window count as preparations begin for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, insisting Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 tournament should serve as a wake up call.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a disappointing qualifying campaign, extending the disappointment of missing back-to-back tournaments.
Speaking on the team’s future, Amokachi admitted the Super Eagles let a golden opportunity slip away despite being one of Africa’s most talented squads.
“This World Cup was a huge opportunity for Nigeria. With the quality we have, we should have been there,” Amokachi said.
The 52-year-old also dismissed the traditional belief that spending long periods in training camp guarantees success, arguing that international football has evolved.
“You don’t prepare by staying in camp anymore. Modern football is about making the most of every FIFA window,” he added.
Amokachi’s comments come at a time when the Super Eagles appear to be showing signs of improvement under head coach Eric Chelle.
Nigeria impressed everyone during the recent Unity Cup before following it up with matches against Poland and Portugal in international friendlies, performances that have restored some hope among supporters.

“We’ve finally started to see the Super Eagles play like a team again. That’s the foundation we must build on.”
Despite the renewed confidence around the national team, Amokachi stressed that talent alone will not be enough when qualification for the 2030 World Cup begins.
“The 2030 World Cup won’t be handed to us. We still have to qualify.”
With Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey and several emerging stars expected to form the core of the next generation of Nigerian football, expectations will once again be high.
For Amokachi, however, the message is simple, potential means little without proper planning, consistent performances and results when they matter most.
