According to reports out of Germany, Florian Wirtz was in England last week to visit Liverpool rather than Manchester City.
Until recently, if you’d asked any fan or pundit where Florian Wirtz was going to play his football next season, you’d have struggled to find anyone who didn’t respond with Bayern Munich. Germany’s top young star, it’s fair to say, seemed to have his future locked in.
If there was any competition, it seemed to be from Manchester City and, perhaps, Real Madrid—though the former seemed mostly keeping their name in the mix as a just in case sort of thing and the latter was mostly popping up due to Wirtz’ manager at Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, moving there.
In recent weeks, though, there have been rumblings of tension between Bayern and Wirtz’ representatives. City have naturally found themselves rising up the Wirtz Sweepstake Speculation charts. Now, though, there’s another club in the mix. And that club is Liverpool.
We’re naturally a little skeptical given how late in the game it seems to be, but it’s not impossible Liverpool have been quietly keeping in touch in case they sense an opening, and Germany’s Kicker claim the player and his family were in England to meet with Liverpool over a potential transfer late last week.
When stories of Wirtz visiting the north-west of England emerged last week, nobody at the time put two and two together and got the Reds—not with regularly-linked city right next door, geographically. If he was in fact visiting Liverpool, though? Well, that’s not nothing.
For now, we’re gonna keep this rumour in so you’re telling me there’s a chance territory. Still, this time last week if you’d said Wirtz and Liverpool in the same sentence, we’d have told you that there wasn’t. So while it still seems a the longest of long shots, well, a long shot’s better than nothing.
