The defender took a big step towards returning to the squad from injury.
Liverpool are winding their (unexpected) title-winning season down with a bit of inversion on the source of drama. With their dominant season making a title race basically moot since the end of 2024, Liverpool are finding the source of most of the spice in their life coming from off the pitch.
Most spicy – and impactful – is of course the impending departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The all-world right-back and Scouser made the announcement this week that he would not be renewing his contract, with a move to Real Madrid all but confirmed.
The Kopites’ attention naturally turned to who would step into the top position with the Scouser leaving, and Arne Slot made his intention known to at least give Conor Bradley a fair shot at the job by indicating that the North Irishman would be starting in Sunday’s match against Arsenal. Behind Bradley, though, there’s a bit of a question mark with only Curtis Jones having deputized their in a spot start this season.
Thankfully, Arne Slot gave the official site an update on Joe Gomez’s return from injury as the utility defender has returned to training this week. It was, though, an update leaned more on hedging than giving a direct affirmation on the Englishman’s return.
“The last part of rehab is the hardest. I cannot guarantee it [that Gomez will feature before the end of the season] but he is getting closer and closer.”
Gomez will likely be key to the club’s plans given not only that he’d deputized for TAA and Bradley at right-back, but that his versatility also saw him spend time at left-back and in a holding midfield role apart from his traditional center-back position.
Many fans looked at JoeGo as surplus a few seasons ago and he’s only managed to further wedge himself into a secure place within the club by doing what many footballers might not be able, or willing, to do: make good on the maxim to be willing to play anywhere the gaffer will have them.
Here’s hoping that he does make it back to the pitch before the season ends and gets to celebrate lifting the trophy while part of Matchday 18.
