The coach became only the fifth boss in Liverpool history to win the league title in their first season.
It has happened. It is in stone, and will be etched into the bottom of the crowned Premier League trophy. Liverpool are your Premier League Champions for 2024-2025. There will be red ribbons on the arms and guards of honor from bitter rivals in the days to come, but today, we get to bask in the feeling of making it official. We cannot mathematically lose the title, and we are once again the most successful club in English football.
Say it however many times you want, it is true. It is fact. And our new coach, Arne Slot, the first Dutchman to do it, made it so – with help from our departed boss Jürgen.
Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to make it so, with a resounding 5-1 victory in front of the Anfield faithful. Despite going up early from a corner, Spurs couldn’t handle the almost desperate press of Liverpool at their best.
“Very, very happy, of course, but to a certain extent also quite unreal because you work so hard for this moment to happen and when it then does happen, it needs some time for you to truly feel it,” Slot told the press following the match.
“But the fans were so happy that it didn’t take us long, didn’t take me long to understand what we’ve achieved together this season.”
Slot became the fifth leader of the Redmen in Liverpool’s history to secure the league title in his first season – 133 years of football playing and style changes and league updates.
“That is so, so special. The moment I knew I would become the new head coach over here, that’s already a moment that you’re so proud of – to be part of such a great football club,” the coach said.
“Then now to be part of the history of this football club is something I think I could only have dreamt of two, three or four years ago. I don’t know if it’s funny or not but I think four, five or six years ago it was the first time when I was here when Pep Lijnders invited me – that was against Tottenham and I think they won that game 4-0 somewhere around Christmas time.
“We all know what happened around Tottenham one or two years ago, so now to win it against them is quite special. The [person] I was with was my sporting director at Cambuur Leeuwarden where I worked back then, he showed me that we were visiting a match from the U21s where Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Joe [Gomez] were involved in that game. So, a special day and not the first time I was here when we played Tottenham.”
Of course, even with Slot’s meticulous planning and the players’ abilities, there was one man still to thank for the achievement, even if he wasn’t there. Slot made sure to give credit to his predecessor Jürgen Klopp for laying a strong foundation that allowed the squad to push through the difficulties of the season to become champions.
“I think that is something not one manager ever did before. So that is what definitely helped me,” Slot explained.
“But apart from that, he helped me even more by the team he left behind and the culture he left behind in that team. The quality the players have was obvious for everyone but the culture of hard work – not only from the players but also from the staff members – has been incredible and that is one of the reasons why we could achieve what we have achieved this season. For obvious reasons, I think it was a nice moment to thank him as well.”
