Sevilla’s newly appointed head coach, Joaquin Caparros, believes that Chidera Ejuke will become a key figure at the club.
Ejuke joined Sevilla on a free transfer last summer following the expiration of his contract with CSKA Moscow.
However, the 27-year-old has registered just two goals and one assist in 22 La Liga appearances a modest return that reflects a stop-start campaign riddled with inconsistency and injury setbacks.
Earlier in the season, Ejuke suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for 11 matches.
During his absence, Sevilla brought in Swiss international Ruben Vargas, who has since cemented a starting role, leaving Ejuke to play catch-up in the squad pecking order.
Despite the competition and a limited output in the final third, Ejuke has shown glimpses of quality, particularly with his dribbling ability.
He averages two successful dribbles per game, proving he can trouble defenders. However, his lack of consistent end product has remained a concern.
Still, Caparros, who took over from Garcia Pimienta last week, remains optimistic.
“He (Ejuke) has quality,” the coach told Futbol Fantasy. “I’ve seen him in games where he’s been decisive for our team. Therefore, he has to come back; he has the confidence of me and the entire coaching staff.”
With Sevilla struggling to find consistency in attack, Dodi Lukebakio is currently their top scorer with 11 goals the team needs fresh inspiration.
Caparros believes Ejuke could be that spark if he rediscovers his rhythm.
The Nigerian international will be eager to make the most of this fresh opportunity under Caparros and remind fans of the talent that once made him one of the most exciting attacking prospects in Europe.
