The asking price is now €50 million.
Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens has been tangentially linked with Liverpool FC in recent months. According to Christian Falk in his Daily Briefing column, Dortmund have lowered their asking price from €100 million to €50 million, with Chelsea leading the race.
“Jamie Gittens: Chelsea have the best chance of prevailing in this particular piece of transfer poker.
“The question is: how much money is the club prepared to pay? Dortmund have already lowered their price tag: from €100 to 50million. This is because the player does not fit into coach Niko Kovac’s system.
“That’s why the player himself would also be very much in favour of a move. Gittens’ dream is a transfer to the Premier League.”
As a Dortmund fan, I think a move for Gittens would seem like a move to replace Luis Diaz as they are the same type of player. He is an aggressive dribbler who at times, has reminded me of Aston Villa-era Jack Grealish. He would bring some much-needed speed to the attacking side of things, and he’s increased his goal contributions output this season, although I’m not quite convinced he’s at the level to make the leap to play for Liverpool right now.
For as much as the fanbase tends to moan about Diaz’s output, replacing him with Gittens would just essentially be downgrading to a younger, albeit less-polished version with even lower output. And I can’t see Liverpool, who seem completely in win-now mode after the extensions to Salah and van Dijk, doing this. It would make much more sense for a club like Chelsea, trying to get back in the top four, to take a gamble on him than Liverpool.
