A 15-year-old boy from Uyo has claimed that he sold a boot gifted to him by Nigeria and Bayer Leverkusen forward, Victor Boniface, to a Rwandan player for $100.
According to the teenager, the Rwandan player approached him after the Super Eagles, Amavubi game in the
AFCON Qualifiers second leg match, which took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on November last year.
In an exclusive interview with Brila FM, the boy recalled that the Rwandan player had seen Boniface give him the boots, and subsequently offered to pay $100 (N150,000.) for them.
When asked what the money was used for, the teenager revealed that he bought a bicycle, school items, and other things.
The video interview of the teenager led to backlash and criticism among Nigerian football fans. While some criticized the boy’s decision-making, calling it “poor” and questioning the low price he sold the boot for, others came to his defense.
Many have pointed out that the boy was a teenager who was in dire need of the money.
It was a dead rubber encounter between Nigeria and Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers because the Super Eagles had picked up their ticket for the tournament.
Boniface spotted a Nike Mercurial Vapor Elite boots in the game, and played 89 minutes in what was his 11th cap for Nigeria.
