Van Dijk is looking forward to leading his team to Wembley once again.
While Virgil van Dijk’s 80th minute goal was just the icing on the cake, it’s always good to see the captain put away one of his powerful headers. After a tough first leg, Liverpool redeemed themselves on Thursday evening by putting four past the visitors and booking themselves another trip to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final.
After the game, van Dijk talked about how he is relishing the opportunity to defend their title in the League Cup.
“I will lead the boys in the best possible way,” van Dijk said. “I’m always proud to be leading out the boys. These occasions are obviously special and we’re really looking forward to it. When the time is there, we will be ready. It will be a difficult game, but any game that we play at the moment is difficult. We have to keep going and let’s see what it brings.”
Wembley beckons, and even though Liverpool seem to be on top of the world right now, van Dijk is weary of their competition.
“Now we go back to Wembley, where we face a very intense Newcastle. So, when the time is there, we’ll prepare well – we’re really looking forward to it,” he said.
Some teams might stay focused on this success, but like the winner that he is, the captain celebrated the victory and then looked forward to what’s next.
“I’m proud of the boys and now we focus on the FA Cup.”
This weekend, the fourth round of the FA Cup sees the Reds travel to take on Plymouth Argyle.
