The IFAB states that “equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”
After scoring Liverpool FC’s third goal against Tottenham Hotspurs on Sunday at Anfield, Cody Gakpo took off his jersey to reveal a tank top bearing “I BELONG TO JESUS”. The message and the font was identifical to what Brazilian and AC Milan superstar Kaka would do, and did when he scored in the UEFA Champions League Final of 2007 against Liverpool. He was also seen wearing the top in the jubilant post-match celebrations as Liverpool celebrated their 20th top-flight title.
Gakpo receiving a booking for removing his jersey and will now also receive a warning from the Foobtall Association too.
As per the International Football Association Board (IFAB) laws of the game, the celebration violted this rule:
“Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”
“Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo.”
“For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”
Well, let’s hope this boils over and nothing really comes out of it.
