Emerging Nigerian shot-stopper Abubakar Rufai has sealed an overseas switch to Australian top-flight outfit Central Coast Mariners, departing domestic side Mavlon FC.

The 18-year-old rose to prominence during the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, where he denied Egypt twice from the spot during a decisive penalty shootout to secure Nigeria the bronze medal.

That stellar tournament run triggered interest from suitors across both Europe and the Middle East. However, the teenager opted for Australia to take his inaugural steps in professional football abroad.

A representative from Mavlon explained that Central Coast Mariners’ stellar track record of nurturing raw talent made the Australian team an ideal destination. The official noted that while fans remember his heroics against Egypt, Rufai possesses comprehensive qualities—such as commanding aerial presence and sharp reflex saves—making this the perfect moment for his career progression.

Rufai has already been unveiled by the A-League side and has integrated into the squad ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Down Under, the young keeper aims to establish himself while staying on track for future call-ups to Nigeria’s Under-23 and senior national teams.
