Liverpool FC’s massive summer of change continues apace as the club formally announced the permanent transfer of striker Darwin Nuñez to Saudi club Al-Hilal. The Uruguayan forward completes a brief stint at Anfield with a Premier League trophy in tow and what is, likely, a mixed consensus among the fanbase.
One of Jurgen Klopp’s final big moves – and one that reportedly saw him overruling the transfer braintrust in 2022 by bringing Nuñez in from Benfica over Alexander Isak. To say that the two forwards have had different experiences in the Premier League since would be a mild understatement given that Nuñez has struggled to finish consistently while Isak is currently regarded as the most complete center forward in England.
It is, though, a bit of a harsh read; while most fans would agree that Darwin didn’t quite reach the potential that his performances the year prior to his move to Merseyside might have indicated, I don’t think you’d find many who’d describe him as an out-and-out bust. For all of the potential frustration born out of a highlight reel’s worth of inexplicable misses, there are equally as many memorable goals scored by the Uruguayan himself. I, for one, won’t ever forget his late-match heroics against Newcastle.
Which is to say, he will be missed around these parts. There’ll be room for tributes in the near term but will leave it here to say that I hope he is able to find his groove and, perhaps, find his way back to one of Europe’s big leagues. Something about the way he approaches the game and moves on the pitch makes me feel like he belongs on a bigger stage. Maybe this diversion will help put him back on track towards the potential that made Jurgen Klopp insist on bringing him in three seasons ago.
