Liverpool are back on their perch after winning their 20th domestic league title.
On sunny Sunday afternoon at Anfield, Liverpool won their twentieth domestic league title and their second title of the Premier League era—and, for the first time since 1990, the players were able to celebrate winning a league title in front of the fans.
The Covid pandemic meant winning the 2019-20 title in empty stadiums, and as special as winning any league title is, feeling like they hadn’t been able to properly celebrate it hurt for the fans and players alike, and for superstar forward Mohamed Salah that made his second league title with the Reds more special than the first.
“To win it at Anfield is incredible and very difficult to describe,” Salah said following the match. “We were watching the [Arsenal] game earlier in the week and everybody wanted Palace to finish it but I know what Anfield is like so I’m glad that we did it here.
“The feeling is unbelievable to play at home and win it by winning the game. The first time was with the pandemic and here we are five years later and it’s incredible, to win it with the fans was incredible. This one for me I think is more special—to be able to do it without Jürgen and with a new group and new manager.”
With Liverpool only needing three more points won by them—or three points dropped by second-place Arsenal—over the final five match weeks of the 2024-25 season, the title was never in any doubt heading into the final month of the campaign.
An Arsenal loss to Crystal Palace would have sealed it, but a draw that gave the Reds a chance to win it, with fans lining the streets to welcome the team and in a joyous, buoyant mood throughout en route to a comprehensive 5-1 victory with Salah scoring the fourth and celebrating by taking a selfie in front of the Kop.
“From the beginning of the season I’ve always taken a selfie with the players [who score],” Salah noted of his second half goal celebration. “So I thought for this one I have to do something special with the fans that will be there forever.”
