Serena Williams suffers shock 53-minute defeat to Johanna Konta

Johanna Konta left Serena Williams reeling after winning 12 games in a row and brushing aside the 23-time Grand Slam winner with an emphatic 6-1 6-0 victory in San Jose.

World No.48 Konta took just 53 minutes to emerge victorious in the first round of the Silicon Valley Classic.

The rout began with both ladies’ holding serve, before Konta took charge and rattled off five games in succession to take the first set.

And the Brit completely dominated the second, as Konta won two service games to love and dished out the bagel on the first of two break – and match – points.

Williams, who only returned to the women’s tour earlier this year after giving birth, made 25 unforced errors to Konta’s nine.

“I think she played well in the second set and I think I wasn’t sharp at all in the first set and she got confident and she clearly ran away with it,” surmised Williams.

Speaking on court after the win, Konta said: “It’s an absolute privilege for me to be on the same court as her.

“She obviously wasn’t playing anywhere near her best level but I was just trying to play the match on my terms and do what I can out here and put aside the incredible champion she is and play the player on the day.
